Colour Pencils

These are the colour pencils that we use, in our opinion, we love this make, they are so easy to use and give great results.

We have this big box with so many colours, they are really good quality colour pencils.

These pencils are so vibrant, they are strong and you can easily use any pencil sharpener to sharpen them.

There are many different types and makes of pencils, but in our opinion these are the best and we love drawing with them.

Little Tip

When you draw with these pencils, use them gently and if you want the colour to be stronger add more layers. Do not use pressure on them thinking you can get a stronger colour, we think this gives the drawing a shiny look which we don't want.

You can also mix colours on your paper by using a couple of colours, for instance: lay down a gentle colour and add another colour over the top and it will mix and look great.

This is one of our drawings in coloured pencils, she was a lovely German Shepherd.

We put her in an exhibition and she actually sold on the preview evening, we were so proud that night.

You can get a lot of detail with these pencils and as they are easy to sharpen you can get a good point for those small details.

Best Pastel Pencils For Drawing

Faber Castell pastel pencils are our favourite for drawing.

The colours are so vibrant and there are so many different colours to choose from, we love them.

Sharpening Pastels

These pencils are so difficult to sharpen, we have tried many different sharpeners on the them without success.

The only way we found to sharpen them is to use a craft knife (see disclaimer). We do not recommend children using this method because it is very easy to hurt yourself so always ask an adult before touching a craft knife.

Once you craft yourself a good size nib on your pencil, you need to make a point so you can add fine details in your drawing.

The way we do this is to use a nail file and lightly rub the pencil on it until you get enough point that will do the job.

Drawing with Pastels

Here is a cute little dog I did for a friend in Pastels.

The pencils are so easy to use and you can cover a large area pretty quickly.

They are also very easy to remove. I did an Ocean Painting in Pastels and didn't like how the bottom right corner came out, so I got a stiff brush and removed the entire corner. I then set about re-doing it and the pastels went on lovely, you would never know I had changed it.

Problems with Pastels

Once a Pastel Drawing is finished, some people say you can spray the drawing but it can dampen the colours down, we don't do that.

Another way to protect the drawing is, use a double mount and frame it so the glass doesn't touch the drawing, this way it can't smudge it.

My Ocean Pastel Drawing went into a frame without a glass cover and one day I was dusting and went along the bottom of the frame, and the fluffy duster took some of the pastel off. Completely my fault, luckily the drawing wasn't damaged, so you have to be careful if your frame doesn't have cover.

Best Graphite Pencils for Drawing

These pencils are great to use for these reason:

  • they are easy to erase if you make a mistake
  • they are easy to sharpen and the nibs don't break easily
  • they are especially good for adding shadows
  • they have a good range of different shades

They are a good all rounder and easy to draw with.

Another plus with them is, you can carry a pencil around with you when you go out and make a quick sketch of something interesting you might come across.

Sizes of Graphite Pencils

The different sizes of pencils have different shades when using them.

We would use HB, F and H out of these pencils, very rarely we would use 2H onwards as they get very harsh to draw with.

The B pencils we use are B and 2B, if we need to go darker we would use 4B, but we have to watch out with the higher B's as they can leave your drawing shiny which we don't want.

Apart from that, they are really comfortable to draw with.
